TO ALL INCOMING GRADE 9 LITERATURE STUDENTS...

GREETINGS!

Here's your last and final summer blog to respond to in connection with the story "Of Mice And Men"...in case this is the book you are currently reading...

PHATIC COMMUNICATION: Exchanges or conversation designed primarily not to transmit information, but rather to reinforce social bonds, signal the beginning or end of a conversation, or engage in ritual activities. For instance, if we pass a stranger in the hallway and say, "Hi, howya doing?" and pass on after a nod, the linguistic exchange was not an actual request for data, but merely a politeness acknowledging the other's presence. Similarly, "thanks for stopping by" or "you're welcome, come again" are all social lubricants to ease the transition to and from ritual activity rather than attempts at factual communication. Phatic communication is the term for this phenomenon.

"Focusing on any scene from this story, what good and clear example of a PHATIC COMMUNICATION can you give based on the given definition on top? Within the entire story, there are good examples to support this concept of phatic communication, which is why this posting is going to be another "first-come, first serve basis only" posting---this means that once an example has already been given, as usual, it cannot be used by anyone else. Please make sure to read the postings first before you put your own blog so that you will not end up wasting your time...?!"

That's All Folks...! Take care and be safe always. I cannot wait to see ALL of you next week---BE READY FOR ME! STUDY-STUDY-STUDY...but do not neglect to enjoy your final days of vacation too...! Oh, and by the way, we are having our Literary Terms Test next week, our Novel Tests, and two to three Paragraph Writing Tests. Remember...next week marks the first day of the rest of your life in Grade 9 with me...CIAO!!!

At the end of the story, Clarson ask George"How did you do it?" I think he didn't actually want to know how did George kill Lennie.
He might want to ease the pain/pressure of losing Lennie out of George's mind.
Or he might want to broke the silent atmosphere between the folks.

Curley's wife moved away from him a little. "I think you're nuts," she said. She started to moved a little, to be away from him because (I think) she a bit scared of Lennie (he was a bit angry at this time).

In OMAM (pg. 39), a powerful, big-stomached man came into the bunk house and met Slim, George, and Lennie.
The man stopped and said hi to Slim, and started the phatic(simple) conversation.

"These guys jus' come," said Slim by way of introduction.
"Glad to meet ya," the big man said. "My name's Carlson" blah blah blah

The conversation runs like this = "Hi, Hello, Glad to meet ya, I'm...." Like how people sort of say hello to each other for proper/good manners.
*Later on he just got to the point about what he's asking and went on talking to Slim.

On page 28 Curley wife come to find his old man and someone answer that he was here just a minute ago then he start a phatic conversation.

"you the new guys the old man was waitin' for?"

"we just came in," said George.

He didn't answer "yes" so it is like saying hi to the new guys but not in a polite way.

On page 35, when Curley's wife is finding Curley and Slim came in and they said "hello" and other things.

She smiled archly and twitched her body. "Nobody can't blame a person for lookin'," she said. There were footsteps behind her, going by. She turned her head. "Hi, Slim," she said.

Slim's voice came through the door. "Hi, Good-lookin'."

This is a phatic communication because Slim and Curley's wife are greeting eachother.

The first met between Crook and Lennie...

"You goy no right to come in my room.Yhis here's my room. Nobody got any right in here but me"

"I ain't doing nothing""Just come to look at my puppy. And I seen your light"

Crook open the conversation with a stranger who he did not know yet which is Lennie. He could say "Do not coming in..go out of my room." But he said it some how like he want to let Lennie out of his room, but he talk a long sentence some how (I think) it just like wanted to talk to him.

On page 59. Because Curley didn't like Lennie, when he smile, Curley said "what the hell you laughin' at?" If we look at this point, we can see that Curley doesn't need the answer. (but just try to disturb)

In this book, the character that does most of the phatic communication seemed to be Curley’s wife. For instance “O.K. Machine. I’ll talk to you later. I like machines.” These sentences are quite meaningless. These sentences may show the feeling of Curley’s wife towards Lennie.

When Carlson brings out Candy's dog to kill it, the atmosphere in the room is dull and silent, which is broken by George when he said "Anybody like to play a little euchre?"
This is a phatic communication because he isn't trying to play the card game, but just want the people in the room to feel better(to start conversations).

On pages 43
"It wasn't nothing," said Slim. "I would of have to drowned most of 'em anyways. No need to thank me about that."

Slim said this to George, so George wouldn't worried about Lennie and the pupies.

P.35 After Jin posted that Curley's wife and Slim said hi to each other, she also says byebye too.

'She was suddenly apprehensive."'Bye, boys," she called into the bunk house, and she hurried away.'

In pages 48, "Hi Lennie," said George. "How do you like the pup now?"
This tell that George and Lennie are friend because it could see by that they greeting each other, and having relationship.

(pg 116) George came quietly out off the brush and the rabbit scuttled back into Lennie's brain.
George said quietly, "What the hell are you yellin' about?"

George came quietly out of the bushes and greet Lennie by saying "What the hell are u yelling about?" but really he don't want the answer to the question.

On page 39, when Carlson first meet Lennie and George...

"Glad to meet ya,"Carlson said. "My name is Carlson"

Candy said "Then-it's all of?"
Candy already know the answer to his question but he just asked to lessen the tense of the momment.
