GREETINGS!
Once again, with apologies for the delay of this posting...it was not easy to have access to an internet where I was situated over the last 12 days. I just got back from the Philippines this afternoon which explains why I am posting this only now. Anyways, here's the second blog posting...
"Find and list down two clear examples of an IRONY from the story OMAM then make sure to explain why you claim these two to be examples of ironies...!"
You have now until Friday, 04 June 2008, to complete and respond to this blog, then I will close access to it antime that day. I am leaving for California on Monday and will be in a different time zone until 05 August 2008...this means that from this time onwards, whenever I give you a due date, I will be closing the blog anytime during that day.
Lastly, for those who do not have access to a computer or an internet, I will repeat what I said before...make sure you continuously do your blogging throught journal entries in a notebook.

1. Lennie is tall and large, but he’s not the one that has the power. Oppositely, George is small, but he’s the one that take care of Lennie. I think this is ironic because in normal life, people are afraid of others that are larger and taller, but in the story, Lennie is the one that follows George.
2. After Lennie killed Curley’s wife, he escaped. When George found him, he didn’t scold him. He talked about their future life as before, said he’ll take care of him, then, he shoot Lennie. I think it’s ironic because George loves Lennie, and said he’ll take care of Lennie, but at last, he killed Lennie.
1. When the boss ask that is George cheating Lennie by use Lennie money for himself(taking Lennie's money) BUt really he is taking Lennie's money to buy his dream house but Lennie is living there too. but Lennie only care about rabits not quite the house.
2. George hands shakes when he is about to kill Lennie and he also put his hand down once or twice. He dont want to kill Lennie, but at last, he kill and also lied him to turn and look and the river to kill without Lennie noticing and say that he was not mad at Lennie and won't give him hell.

* Lennie's lastname is Small but he's actually a big, strong worker. I think it's very ironic and very obvious because a BIG man's lastname is Small which does not match at all.
* George kills Lennie because he loves him. He doesn't want Lennie to be killed by other men. He thinks that it's better if he dioes it himself. He brings him to death because he loves him, I think it's the major irony in this novel.

1) Lennie is a big and powerful guy, but his last name is Small. i think this is very ironic, because a big and large guy's last name is Small, they are completely different.
2) George don't want Lennie to get killed by other men. George say all the good things to Lennie and let him think that he didn't do any worng. George hesitate for a long time, because he don't want Lennie to die, but if he let other men to kill Lennie for him, he wold do the same mistake as what Candy did with his old dog.
1. Lennie's last name is Small, but actually he isn't small at all, he's big and strong. It's ironic to know someone's last name is Small since their actual size is big. I think that the author name Lennie's last name as Small is to show that even though Lennie is big, but he's small in another way. What I mean is to show that he has mental problems, and his behaviors shows that he needs protection.
It's also quite ironic that George is small, but he has the role of protecting Lennie, the big one. Usually people think that ones that are strong and big should protect the smaller ones, but in the novel, it's the other way around.
2. George had a talk with Lennie after Lennie killed Curley's wife.
He told him that he wasn't mad about him and they talked about their future. George decided to kill Lennie but he hesitated for quite a few times before he finally shoots Lennie.
At this point, people may feel ironic that why did George killed Lennie since he protects and loves him a lot? I think that it's because George really loves Lennie, so he decided to killed Lennie himself then let Curly kill him... this may be a way to protect Lennie (die without pain).
It may sound ironic of "because George loves Lennie, so he killed him", but in many times, someone's action may not be understandable, but each of their movements may mean something.

1) In the story it summarizes Lennie as “a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide, sloping shoulders…” But Lennie’s whole name was [Lennie Small], which was a example for ironic. It is also ironic because of Lennie and George’s personality, Lennie is big but he got a heart like a child; George is small and little t beside Lennie he is always protecting him, and seems he is more adult act.
2) Lennie accidentally killed Curley’s wife and when George notice Curley’s wife was died he said sharply “I ain’t gonna let ‘em hurt Lennie…” But at last he killed Lennie by himself. He doesn’t want other men to kill Lennie; he loves Lennie so he kills Lennie by himself. It is a example of omam.

- Lennie’s a big, strong worker, but actually he has a last name – Small, Lennie Small.
- At the last part of this book Lennie killed Curley’s wife. Everyone’s trying to catch him, and kill him. But George notices that other than him, no one could really kill him. George kills Lennie because he loves him, and don’t have more trouble for him. So he told the dream again to comfort Lennie, and told him to look at the lake, when Lennie is focusing on the river, he shoots him. This is the major ironic in “Of mice and men”.
Yui9B
George always says that his life would be much better without Lennie, but he is the only one who cares, comforts, and always looks after the big guy (after Aunt Clara). It’s a verbal irony because he knew all the time that his standard of living would improve, he didn’t need to find job after jobs, wouldn’t be chased around, etc. However, all this time George devoted his life to protect Lennie.
It’s ironic since George could just leave Lennie behind all this time, but he stays and lives a hard life.
When Lennie accidently killed Curley’s wife and went into hiding, George asked Slim that could they just bring Lennie in and lock him up, later he asked Curley not to shoot Lennie because he didn’t know what he was doing. George is trying to protect and save Lennie. He begged for his best friend’s life, nevertheless he ended up killing the big guy with his own hand. Because of love, he had to kill his mate.
If we love someone, we wouldn’t kill her/him; instead, we would be risking our life to protect our beloved. George could just run off with Lennie like what they used to do, why kill?
The first irony to me seems to be the names of the two men.
•Lennie Small and George Milton, if having to choose who has the bigger physical appearance without reading the book before; I would choose George Milton.Seeing the fact that Lennie Small is the big guy, there are some conflict between their physical appearance and their names. If looked at the other side, the inner side, their names totally fits their personality. Their names are more likely to be named based on their “mental mass” not their body mass.
The second irony is when Geroge kills his beloved friend.
•George, as we know always travels with Lennie, as we know he loves Lennie. Also Lennie loves George. It is very ironic that George killed his own friend who he took care of and loved for. Maybe, sometimes we might feel that it is better for we to kill our love than others killing them.

1.the first men was small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong feature. every part of him is defined: small strong hand, slender arms, a thin and bony nose. behind him walked his opposite, a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide sloping shoulder; and he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws. his arms did not swing at his side, but hung loosely.(p.2)
George was small but strong, and lennie was big but he was dumb.
2. lennie was big but he was bullied by curley.
Even Lennie has mental disability, but he is large and strong. But his last name is “Small” It is iron because he is a big guy and has strong arms, and his name is “Small”, which it doesn’t fix to him. And use “Small” as a name is “unusual”.
You like animals, do you? Most people like or love animals, but you wouldn’t well apathy to a live, will you? But in the story, Carlson and Slim killed Candy’s old dog. And they don’t feel sympathy to the dog. It is irony because people feel sympathy to life, but they don’t. And usually, the owner will strong disagree to kill his or her pet, they will pet it until he or she is old and passed. However, Candy doesn’t do that too.

One of the ironies of OMAM is that the pistol which used to kill Lennie is the same the one that killed Candy’s dog in order to put out of its suffering and misery that does the same for Lennie. Ironically, when Candy’s old dog is going to be killed, everyone in the ranch was pity for his loss of dog. However, when George’s best friend, Lennie, was killed, no one felt sympathy for George.
The other irony is when Lennie hide in the bushes where George told him to go when something bad happens. In beginning, George kept on telling him to hide in the bushes and wait for George to come when he just happen to get in trouble like he always done before. At the end, when Lennie saw George came and met him at the bushes, he felt relieved and safe. This is ironic because the place where Lennie feels safe is the place where he dies.
1. George has to end Lennie's life but he told stories to make Lennie happy, so he would die laughing instead of being scared. George also has to kill Lennie before someone else did so because that someone might torture Lennie due to anger and George didn't want Lennie to die painfully. Indeed, Lennie will still go to jail or somewhere worse if he lived. This is ironic because killing usually is recognized as a bad act but in this situation George killed Lennie in a euthanasic way so that Lennie would die by his own hand peacefully rather than by his enemies' hands.
2. The other irony is in Lennie's name; he's named Small. Even though his name is small but his body is big. Lennie is a big man but he has mental problems, this, of course tells us that Lennie is big PHYSICALLY and small MENTALLY. The author named him Small to let us know that even though Lennie is a big man, actually he's small.

1)When everyone is keeping on saying that Curley’s wife will get them in trouble, its an irony that telling that sometime in the story she will get them specially Lennie, who is not really start into trouble. And at the end, Curley’s wife is really got Lennie into trouble.
2)In one of the scene when Lennie goes into Crooks room and talk, then Crooks ask Lennie about if George leave him alone or throw him away what will he do. Then Lennie keep shouting that George will come back and never leave him alone. This is very ironic because its show us that maybe sometime in the book George will throw Lennie away and its does really happen. George throws Lennie away by killing him.

1. In the part where Curley's wife is telling Lennie about her life is a little irony. She thinks that she could have a better life than living with Curley which that is kind of confusing, she said she 'could have' but she didn't. She always have the thought of wanting things that is good and perfect for her own life and just because her old lady won't let her is she going to stop dreaming from that? In my opinion, no way. She talks like she had the choice but really in my eyes i think she can't have any life better than being Curley's wife anyway. Lastly, why is she interested in Lennie anyway, Lennie is just a retarted guy, in the ranch there is so many others that she could choose to be with. In real life are you going to choose a smart guy to be with or a guy that can't think for himself? I thought Curley's wife is a girl whose wish for the best for her ownself.(p.99)
2. Why would Curley's wife let Lennie pet her hair even though she saw what Lennie has done to the little puppy. Not only that, in the conversation she already realized that Lennie's kind of nuts but then just because Lennie says he's not she's just going to believe him? Also when they talk Lennie always talk about petting soft things, rabbit and such why didn't she sees how crazy liking he has towards soft things and still tell Lennie to pet her hair as well? Who would except her to let Lennie pet her hair? The reason for Lennie's death is a bit irony isn't it... (p.102)
1.) Lennie is said to be harmless but really he is very harmful he kills people with out sensing it.
2.) Lennie loves to pet things and he doesn't want harm for these pets but every single thing he pet dies, this is an irony because he loves it so he kills it (somewhat like George, at the end of the story)
1. Lennie is a large and tall man but he is not harmful at all. It’s totally opposite to George, George is much smaller than Lennie but he is much smarter. George is the one who can take care of Lennie, but normally bigger person have to take care of the smaller person.
2. George kills Lennie because he loves Lennie. He doesn’t want Lennie to be killed by a worse death, but after Lennie is dead, George become lonely. And the dream that Lennie and George wanted to own a farm is disappear.
1.Even though Lennie's name have a "Small" in it, but his figure is big. And usually story it will happen like lennie is the one taking care of George, but this story George is the one incharge of everything about Lennie.
2.At the end of the story, George killed Lennie by not letting Lennie to be like Candy's dog, got killed by other people instead of himself.

1. At first George said he didn't like Lennie because Lennie always brought troble to him. Then when Lennie said he could go on his own way. George don't let him go. I think this is irony because if I am George I would let Lennie go. I would not just talk about it and don't let him go.
2. Lennie last name was Small, but he was a big guy. From the boss's son reaction Lennie is a very big guy, bigger than the other guy. I think this is irony because it would make more sense if Curley was big because he is the boss son and Lennie is small because he didn't had any power.
Henry 8B
1. Lennie is a powerful guy but his last name is Small. I think this is a irony because in really life a powerful guy will not want a name call Small because small is like he is weak.
2. Another irony is George kills Lennie. As we know they are best friend, but George kills Lennie because he think his is taking care of him. He don’t want other people to kill him, so he do it by himself.
Tommy 9A
1. I think Lennie should be the one who take care George. But George is the one who always help Lennie. This is ironic because in real life the big guys always take care the small.
2. Lennie love to pet animal but he always kill it and why don't he stop because he will kill it. i think this is ironic because he love it but he kill it. Most of the time people will stop because we don't want to keep killing what we love.
JOYCE 9A [#2419]
1. Lennie's last name is small but Lennie is a big, strong, powerful worker who doesn't use his physicality to harm people (on purpose). The same gun that put Candy's dog out of its suffering and misery does the same for Lennie.
2. Everyone on the ranch feels really badly for Candy when his dog is shot, but no one except Slim feels that way for George after losing his best friend.
3. George spends the novel complaining about having to take care of Lennie but doesn't feel the real pain until Lennie is dead.
[Mine "two ironies" are too less, so i type three ironies.]
sean 9A
Candy's dog was dragged out to be killed because it was disabled and crippled and it was so old. While Candy is sitting there and no one offered to kill him even though he lost a hand and he's old. Lennie is the one who seems most excited and eager about the land he and George plan to buy, especially the rabbit part. But the dream ends beause of Lennie's action. Accidentally strangling Curley's wife and making George kill him.
Pea 9C
1) There was one day that George left Lennie alone. So, everyone who were their friends kept say that one day George will leave you behind. Then Lennie got a bit crazy (shouting). It told me that one day, George will kill Lennie or throw hime away.
2) Curly's wife might brought some trouble for them. George told Lennie before that you should ignore Curly's wife, ortherwise, they might got in trouble. It told me that one day, it will be true.
Steve 9C
1.At first George say that he hate Lennie, because his a trouble maker. At last George say i want you to stay with me. For this we can see that George love Lennie very much.
2.Lennie's name is Lennie Small, but he is actually a big guy and strong worker.
Bow 9c
OMAM, irony
The first irony in the book that I want to tell is when Lennie want to keep the secret from Curly's wife and don't want her to tell anybody, so Lennie shake the women's shoulder that made her neck broke and died. Before that when Lennie touch her head she did not scared of him at all. Although she knew how strong Lennie was, look at the pets that Lennie have touch..it all died. I think of this irony, because Lennie have done something bad when he doesn't know how he do it. That turn to be very terrible that he killed her without knowing.
Another irony that I'm telling is when Lennie get killed by George. When Lennie hide and George come to him, talk something good, did not get mad at him, saying about the future dream...that made Lennie feel very hapy and good, George tell him to look at the view far away..then George shot Lennie in the head. I choose this because this is the most irony in the story, when Lennie reach his peak of happiness about his dream, suddenly George shot him which is a sad thing.
Another one is just a strange irony which about Lennie's name.Lennie's last name is "Small" which his figure is "Big". It is so opposite of the real thing!
1. On their journey to worked on a new ranch. George and Lennie were eating the can food. Lennie said to George that he didn't need any more ketchup. Lennie said if George hate him he can go away from George. George also said that Lennie is the one who mess his life, but when Lennie was about to go, George quickly said that he need Lennie. That is because he care and love Lennie.
2. Lennie last name is Small, but he is a huge man. George was small, but small take care a big. It is not normal for the small guy to guard a big guy because I myself always take care of my bro.
Lennie's lastname is Small, but he is not small, he is very strong and large.
Lennie always follows George everything he says, even though Lennie is taller and larger than George, but the power is at George.
After Lennie killed Curley's wife, he escaped from the camp. When George found him, he didn't scold or yell at him, but instead he talk about their future live's and promise to take care him. But then after that he killed Lennie.
1) Lennie is a tall and large guy, but he is kind of dumb, so he has no power. George is small, but he has the power to watch Lennie. This is ironic, because people usually dont usually like to stay with dumb guy like Lennie, but in the story George and Lennie always stay together. Also Lennie is big and tall, but George is small, so usually small people get scare of big people, but in the story it is big guy is scare of small guy.
2) I dont why Lennie's last name is Small, because he is not small, but he is huge and tall. Also he is very powerful than others, so it is ironic to me that his last name is Small.
